RESPONSIBLE OWNERSHIP

Before adding a new furry or feathery friend to your family take a moment and think of all factors.  Be sure that everyone in the house is ready to welcome a new friend.  Think about your work schedule- do you often work overtime?  What will you do during your vacation:  boarding, pet sitter, take your pet with you?  If you rent check with your landlord.  If you own your own home check with city regulations regarding breed restrictions. Can you financially afford the highest quality food, routine veterinary care, emergency veterinary expenses, etc. What are your future plans?  A baby, a new job, travel overseas?  If you are older, consider including your pet in your estate planning and also in the event you are placed in a skilled nursing facility.  We have seen (and rescued) many pets whose owners were placed in a skilled nursing facility and the family doesn't wish to keep the pet.  This is a heartbreaking situation for owner and pet alike.

The first decision that needs to be considered is what species of pet?  Is someone in the house allergic to a specific type of pet?  Prior bad experiences?  What other pets do you own?   All species have specific requirements.  Be sure to THOROUGHLY research the proper care of your chosen species BEFORE bringing one home.  Do NOT impulse purchase or rely on a pet stores for information on how to care for your pet.  They are notorious for misinformation, and selling products that aren't the best for the pet.  Very small pets are poor choices for very small children.
